  1. The mineral sodium chloride, NaCl, or common
  2. salt. When pure it is colourless and
  3. transparent, but it is often pink, red or
  4. yellow. It is soft and has a low density.
  5. Halite occurs naturally in evaporite deposits
  6. that have precipitated on evaporation of
  7. bodies of salt water. As rock salt, it forms
  8. beds within a sedimentary sequence; it can
  9. also migrate upwards through surrounding
  10. rocks to form salt domes. It crystallizes in
  11. the cubic system.
